Liberal donor and Beijing “friendship” booster now accused of war crimes

Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle react to a Global News report that the CBSA wants to deport Rong Xiang “Tiger” Yuan, a Trudeau donor who allegedly lied his way into Canada.

On Tuesday's live stream, Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle reacted to alarming new reporting from Global News that a prominent Liberal donor and Beijing-friendly community leader is now facing deportation for alleged war crimes.

According to investigative reporter Stewart Bell, the Canada Border Services Agency has launched deportation proceedings against Rong Xiang Yuan, 63, also known as "Tiger" Yuan. The B.C. resident founded the Canada-China Association for Promoting Friendly Relations, a group whose stated mission was closer ties between Ottawa and Beijing.

"Friendly relations. We're just 'friends'," Sheila said.

The CBSA alleges Yuan committed crimes against humanity in the 1980s as a member of the People's Liberation Army, the armed wing of the Chinese Communist Party, and misrepresented his military record when he applied for permanent residence, which he received in 2008. The allegations stem from China's border conflict with Vietnam, where a 1988 People's Daily report described Yuan as a platoon leader involved in a deadly clash with Vietnamese forces.

Yuan was photographed beside Justin Trudeau at a 2016 Liberal Party event and donated $1,500 to Trudeau's Montreal riding association, plus $2,800 to the federal party. Fellow directors of Tiger Arms Ltd., a Port Coquitlam gun retailer he once ran, gave thousands more.

Global News also reported that Yuan lives on a seven-acre, $4.3-million estate and was flagged as a high-risk gambler who wagered more than $4 million in 2015 alone.

"How much money is this guy worth and where did it come from?" Lise asked.

Sheila noted the irony of a firearms dealer with alleged PLA ties donating to a government that targeted law-abiding Canadian gun owners — and wondered aloud whether this is how Chinese police stations ended up operating on Canadian soil.
