MONTREAL — Rebel News correspondent Alexa Lavoie in the state broadcaster’s building for the final Quebec leaders' debate, and this time there was no court battle required to get her there. Radio-Canada credited her outright with a small but telling sign, she says, that press freedom is holding its ground in Quebec.

With only one journalist per outlet allowed to question each leader, and time running short, Lavoie managed to put questions to three of the five candidates.

She pressed Quebec Liberal leader Charles Milliard on what concrete steps he'd take to stop Montreal's streets serving antisemitism and the glorification of terrorist groups.

She asked PQ leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon whether he'd follow Éric Duhaime's lead in restricting services for asylum seekers. He replied that the Conservative leader’s promise to "clean things up" on asylum seekers is "fiction": the file is "entirely under the control of the federal government.".

And she confronted Conservative leader Éric Duhaime on organized crime shootings, extortion, and arson hitting Montreal and beyond asking what his party would do to back up police and restore deterrence. Duhaime said his full public safety plan drops next week, promising his party will propose "the toughest laws against criminals" and stand with victims, as arson, shootings and extortion

Two leaders — Québec Solidaire's Ruba Ghazal and the CAQ's leader — ran out the clock before Lavoie could question them. She says she'd have asked Ghazal about a 2023 "river to the sea" post amid rising antisemitism concerns in Montreal.
