B.C. Conservative MLA Peter Milobar has quit his party’s caucus and will sit as an Independent, saying his values no longer align with the direction of the party under its new leader.

Milobar, the MLA for Kamloops Centre, announced his departure Thursday, effective immediately.

“Since 2017, I have been entrusted by the residents of Kamloops and the area to be their voice in Victoria,” Milobar said in a statement.

Effective today, I’m sitting as an Independent MLA. This isn’t the end of the conversation, it’s the start of one. I’ll have more to say soon.

His departure comes after B.C. Conservative members selected Kerry-Lynne Findlay as the party’s new leader.

“I completely respect the vote of the membership, and that Kerry-Lynne Findlay has earned the right as leader to shape the party as she sees fit,” Milobar said.

“It has, however, become clear to me over the last few months that my values don’t align with this new direction.”

Milobar said he would therefore sit as an Independent member of the B.C. Legislature.

“What matters most to me hasn’t changed — serving the people of Kamloops Centre well,” he said.

Milobar did not elaborate on the specific disagreements that prompted his departure, but hinted that more details are coming.

“This isn’t the end of the conversation, it’s the start of one,” he wrote on social media. “I’ll have more to say soon.”
