Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Canada will match U.S. President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs “dollar for dollar,” after the tariffs were implemented late Friday night when negotiators failed to reach a trade agreement. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs will come into effect the Tuesday after Labour Day.

Carney emphasized during a press conference Saturday morning that these measures have been taken “reluctantly,” but with confidence that they are in the “best interest of Canadians.”

Commenting on the failed negotiations, Carney said the U.S. “asked too much and offered too little” in last-minute changes to the terms of the agreement this week.

Notably, Carney delivered a tacit threat to disrupt the United States’ energy imports from Canada — a move that would threaten Alberta most of all, since much of that energy consists of Alberta’s exports.

“Canada fuels American growth,” said Carney, “supplying 99% of their natural gas imports, 85% of their electricity imports, 60% of their crude oil imports. I don't think they want us to stop sending any of that energy.”

Carney concluded that the U.S. tariffs are a “miscalculation” and commended Canadians for their dedication to being “our own best customer” as Canada shifts its trading relationships.

“With the strongest fiscal position in the G7 and a resilient economy, Canada has all the resources we need to pivot and to prosper,” he said, noting that the Canadian economy is creating jobs at a rate four times that of the U.S.
