Fact Check: Smith confirms Option 2 victory would trigger path to binding Alberta independence vote
Option 2 asks voters to direct the Alberta government to commence the legal process required to hold a binding provincial referendum on Alberta ceasing to be part of Canada.
For months, Albertans have heard conflicting claims about what an Option 2 victory on October 19 would actually mean. Now, there is considerably more clarity.
Premier Danielle Smith says that if Option 2 wins, her government would move ahead with a binding referendum on Alberta independence in spring 2027. She made the remarks at a recent Lethbridge town hall.

Just heard from Premier @ABDanielleSmith that IF a majority of Albertans vote to move forward towards an independence referendum that a binding referendum would be held in spring 2027!
October's vote is not itself the independence referendum. It is effectively a referendum on whether to have the referendum, and it is non-binding.
Option 2 asks voters to direct the Alberta government to commence the legal process required to hold a binding provincial referendum on Alberta ceasing to be part of Canada.
An Option 2 victory therefore would not make Alberta independent on October 20. It would not immediately begin negotiations with Ottawa or suddenly change Alberta's constitutional status.
What it would do is establish a clear pathway to the real question. Smith has now supplied the other crucial piece: the timeline.
