Firearms as essential service: Calgary gun store owner won’t shut down as sales skyrocket

Are firearms retailers an essential service? While Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has asked the majority of Albertan businesses to close their doors, Canadian firearms retailers are seeing a surge in business.

J.R., owner of The Shooting Edge in Calgary, says that not only has the purchase of goods spiked, but there has been an “insane” surge in applications for his firearms training course. On top of the relative minority who have purchased firearms for home protection, many of his clientele rely on his business to stay open so they can feed their family, he says.

It remains unclear whether his business will be ordered closed by Ottawa, should Trudeau Jr. invoke the same War Measures Act that his father did 50 years ago.
