No more name tags for RCMP officers?

RCMP officers are no longer required to wear name tags while on duty.

This just in, folks: according to a recent article in The Globe and Mail, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has quietly changed its uniform policy. Which is to say the RCMP no longer requires its officers to wear name tags while on duty.

The Globe article notes that this move has drawn criticism from advocates and experts who say it will limit police transparency, complicate the complaints process and fuel distrust in Indigenous communities.

Oh, and this policy embracing law enforcement anonymity is not just exclusive to the Mounties.

Last year, the Calgary Police Service changed its policy to allow officers the choice of either name tags or badge numbers for their uniforms. Vancouver’s police force also has a similar policy. In Winnipeg, the city’s police officers only display their badge numbers. And the Toronto Police Service is currently considering a similar policy as well. I’m sure Officer Bubbles approves...

Apparently, the move toward secrecy is all about the threat of doxxing and internet harassment against officers.

Really?

In any event, I know from bitter experience that the Mounties were already hiding their identities – both names and badge numbers – before the official policy change.

Remember back in January 2024 when I tried to scrum Chrystia Freeland in Richmond Hill, Ontario? I wanted to know why the federal government wasn’t recognizing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. After all, the IRGC literally has Canadian blood on its hands after it shot down Ukrainian Airlines Flight 752 in January 2020, killing all 176 occupants onboard as well as an unborn baby.

Well, Fraulein Freeland doesn’t like impolite questions, you see.

As you saw, the thug who assaulted and falsely arrested me never offered his name nor badge number even after being repeatedly asked for this information. Now, why would that be? Probably because this lunatic was already suffering from buyer’s remorse. His brutality was eye-witnessed by dozens of people and was recorded on numerous cell phones. Indeed, less than an hour after the arrest, this hothead dropped all charges, probably thinking this matter would go away. It isn’t going away. Indeed, we are currently suing the RCMP over this grotesque breach of our Charter rights.

In any event, we would only later discover that the name of this wannabe Gestapo member is Greg Dumouchel. Fancy that? Because I initially thought he was just some random dude going to Comicon dressed as Uncle Fester from The Addams Family.

This crackpot idea of hiding the identities of police officers is an insidious trend that completely goes against transparency – especially given the fact that police officers are armed with lethal force.

Furthermore, after so many scandals too numerous to list in this space, public trust in the RCMP is now lower than lobster shite. And this half-baked policy allowing Mounties to remain anonymous will only further fuel public mistrust.

It’s shameful. But then again, these days, does the RCMP even give a rodent’s rectum about public trust? I really don’t think they do. And that’s scary.

Let’s not forget who was PM when the recent decline of the RCMP began.

We’re one step closer to a police state. Police must be held accountable for any misdeeds. And will body cams be removed next? Let’s write our MPs and tell them this is unacceptable.
