On last night's episode of The Ezra Levant Show, we looked at an essay published by the World Economic Forum in 2016, imagining what our best lives should look like in the year 2030.

Here's a bit of what Ezra had to say on the topic:

I was at a speech by Peter Thiel back in the before times, and he said a startling thing — he’s a tech giant, the inventor of PayPal, the first outside investor in Facebook, probably the closest thing to a freedom-fighter in Silicon Valley, in fact he left the city because he said he found it too politically stifling.

Anyway, Peter Thiel said: what scientific breakthroughs have we had in the past fifty years?

We haven’t been on the moon in nearly 50 years. What’s the breakthrough? Have we cured cancer? Where are the flying cars?

I paraphrase.

And as to tech and smartphones — which is his area of excellence, he said — smartphones are basically little distracting video games we can play on as we ride through the New York subway system that was built 100 years ago. I was stunned by that — we are entertaining ourselves, numbing ourselves. That’s what tech has done.
