A new national poll reveals growing public dissatisfaction with Canada’s immigration levels and a sharp decline in trust toward newcomers—particularly refugees.

According to a Leger survey conducted for the Association for Canadian Studies and the Metropolis Institute, 62% of Canadians now believe the country is admitting too many immigrants—a four-point increase since March and more than double the 30% who said the same just six years ago.

In addition to immigration volume, the poll measured public trust in newcomers. Just 42% of Canadians said immigrants can be trusted, and that number falls to 36% for refugees. Meanwhile, 20% of respondents said immigrants cannot be trusted, with 23% expressing distrust specifically toward refugees.

The poll highlights a significant shift in Canadian sentiment as public concerns over housing shortages, strained healthcare systems, and job competition continue to mount.

The results come amid heated national debate over the Carney's government’s record-breaking immigration targets and ballooning temporary resident population, now the equivalent of 18.5% of Canada’s private sector workforce.
