Trudeau’s election cops demanded that I hand over my editorial plans. Here’s what I sent them.

UPDATE: Trudeau’s Elections Commissioner convicted us!

Ezra Levant (January 22, 2021):

I just received a priority mail letter from Justin Trudeau’s Elections Commissioner: I’ve been convicted of two counts of breaking the law and I’ve been fined a whopping $3,000 — specifically for writing a book comparing Justin Trudeau to Tony Soprano, and for the drawing on the book’s cover that compares them.

It’s my best-selling book, “The Libranos: What the Media Won’t Tell you About Justin Trudeau’s Corruption.”

They convicted me under sections 352 and 353 of the Elections Act.

The conviction letters say I’m guilty because “the book title’s reference to ‘Libranos’, which was clearly designed to create an association between the name of a registered party and The Sopranos, a mafia-themed television show, and to link the party to corruption.”

They also say the book’s cover is an illegal election activity. It’s based on the original poster for the TV show, The Sopranos. Trudeau’s staff says that’s illegal because it’s too mean: “drawings of the show’s characters were replaced with drawings of the leader and other public figures of the party”.

I know you’ll find this hard to believe, so I’ve put a copy of the two convictions below so you can read the letter for yourself.

These convictions and fines came as a surprise to me. The trial was done in secret. I was not invited to the trial, I did not know about it, I was not allowed to attend or to send a lawyer.

I knew they were hunting me, because they interrogated me a year ago, but I really assumed they had dropped the thing, because it was so absurd.

There were 24 books published about Trudeau in the 2019 election. Mine was the only one that criticized Trudeau. And mine is the only one that was investigated, prosecuted — and now convicted and punished.

Just so you know, this is all illegal. The Elections Act says books and the promotion of books — that means ads selling the book — are exempt from election censorship.

Here’s section 2:

And of course the Charter of Rights guarantees my freedom of speech and the press. So this is just Trudeau attacking anyone who embarrasses him.

I’m not going to pay the $3,000 in fines. I’m sorry, I’m just not.

I do not accept a punishment fine for writing a book criticizing Justin Trudeau.

I’m going to appeal these convictions, because obviously it’s a political set-up. And it’s a sign of Trudeau’s censorship plans to come. Just last week, Trudeau’s government told the Globe and Mail they intend to set up an entire new government bureaucracy in charge of censorship. And obviously, their top target is Rebel News. They aren’t hiding it.

I’m going to appeal these illegal convictions. And I’m going to help other journalists and authors, even though most of them these days are fine with censoring conservatives and cancel culture. I’m going to challenge the constitutionality of this entire law, so that no other Canadian will ever be interrogated by police and convicted in a secret trial and fined $3,000 again, for criticizing a politician.

That constitutional challenge is going to cost me much more than $3,000 — there’s no way it could cost less than $100,000. But I’ll never bow down to a bully.

If you can help me, please donate here to chip in to our legal defence fund.

I hope we win. And if we lose, I have to tell you now: I simply won’t pay. I just won’t. The law gives Trudeau the power to seize our assets — to take our computers, or to raid our bank account or even to take our books, in satisfaction of their fine.

Do you doubt Trudeau would do that? I mean, what would Tony Soprano do?

Censorship isn’t coming. It’s already here.

We are the canary in the coal mine. If we don’t fight back now, you could be next.

Please help us crowdfund our legal appeal and constitutional challenge!

Ezra Levant (March 3, 2020):

Yesterday, my lawyers received another threat letter from Justin Trudeau’s elections police. They demanded that I hand over all of my private notes and files relating to my best-selling book, “The Libranos”.

That’s an illegal demand, of course. We have freedom of the press in Canada and privacy laws too. We’re allowed to write books that criticize the prime minister. This isn’t Iran or China.

But here’s the thing. When I met with Trudeau’s elections police a few weeks ago, I asked them to make me a deal — that if they were planning to raid our Rebel News offices for documents, that they’d simply send me or my lawyers a request for our records, and we’d deal with it in court.

I asked them to rule out a SWAT-style raid on our offices. I asked them to promise not to smash down our doors.

And they refused. They refused to rule out an actual police raid on my office.

And then yesterday they sent an e-mail to my lawyers demanding that I hand over any relevant documents “as soon as possible”. (You can see that email below.)

Here’s a video I made, describing the latest demands from Trudeau’s elections police — and showing how they refused to rule out a police raid:

Email-to-lawyers-Rebel-News-1

So what would you do? Would you give Trudeau your private editorial notes? Your business plans?

Part of me thinks I should be scared. But part of me thinks this whole thing is a stupid joke. I mean, we’re still Canada, right? This must be a joke, right?

So I made a decision. I sent our key document — it’s marked “top secret” — to Trudeau’s police.

And here’s what I just sent them by e-mail:

LOGO-trudeau-book-cartoon

It’s a joke.

Just like Trudeau is a joke.

Just like Trudeau’s election cops are a joke.

Just like Trudeau’s respect for the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a joke.

It’s the “top secret” plan for my book.

It’s a cartoon, so Trudeau can understand it.

Did you think I was going to hand over my private editorial notes to these bullies?

I’d go to jail first. And maybe I will. But not without the fight of my life.

It’s about to get real now. But we’ve lawyered up — the same lawyers we used to beat Trudeau when he banned our reporters from covering the election debates last year.

CAN YOU HELP US FIGHT BACK?

You know what? We’re going to win. I just need your help to cover my legal bills — please use the form below to chip in, if you can.

This is heavy stuff. Free speech in jeopardy, police bullying, illegal searches and seizures. So it’s up to us now. Help me do the serious work.

And then have a laugh with me, because we still have the right to laugh, don’t we?

You can buy your own copy of my “top secret” one-page strategy cartoon by visiting our store. It’s pretty funny.

Thanks, my friends. Now let’s go fight and win.

Ezra Levant (February 3, 2020):

You have probably seen my hidden video recording of Justin Trudeau’s two federal investigators who hauled me into their Ottawa office to grill me about my bestselling book, The Libranos.

That video has been seen hundreds of thousands of times and it has made news around the world.

(Curiously, it has been all but ignored in Canada — only Rex Murphy has written about it in any newspaper, and a handful of small, independent radio stations. To the rest of the Media Party, Trudeau’s police interrogating an author seems just fine.)

And, what’s even more depressing, not a single civil liberties group has said a word — not Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, not the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, not PEN Canada, none of them.

In other words, we’re on our own.

That’s fine. It’s not the first time.

Because we’re not really alonewe’ve got you on our side!

And we’ve got a crack team of young free speech lawyers who know the law a lot better than Trudeau’s lazy team. And so on Friday, they sent a scorching letter to Trudeau’s election staff.

Here’s a video I just published, where I go through the letter:

Our lawyers identify, point by point, how this censorship investigation is illegal — and how it violates the government’s own rules. (For example, these two book cops forgot to “read me my rights” before they interrogated me). You can read the entire letter here:

2020-01-31-RE-LAW-Ltr.-to-Commissioner-of-Canada-Elections

I’ll have part two of my hidden video later this week — and believe it or not, I haven’t even shown you the worst parts yet.

But in the meantime, click here to read our lawyers’ letter, and know that we’re fighting back against Trudeau’s censorship, even if the rest of the Media Party are just fine with it!

CAN YOU HELP US FIGHT BACK?

The only way we can afford to fight the Goliath of government is with your help. Unlike the CBC, we don’t get $1.5 billion/year from Trudeau. Unlike Canada’s newspaper, we haven’t signed up for Trudeau’s $600 million/year bail-out.

That’s why we’re independent and can fight back — but that’s also why we need your help. Please use the form below to help cover the costs of our legal eagles. Thanks.

David Menzies (February 1, 2020):

On this week’s episode of Rebel Roundup, Ezra Levant sat in with David Menzies to debrief on his interrogation by two ex-RCMP officers over The Libranos, a book critical of Justin Trudeau.

Ezra Levant (January 30, 2020):

On last night’s episode of The Ezra Levant Show, we showed you the stunning hidden camera footage I took during an interrogation by the Trudeau government’s Elections Commission over my book, The Libranos. Lawyer Aaron Rosenberg also joined me to react to the footage:

Ezra Levant (January 29, 2020):

I wrote a best-selling book about Justin Trudeau in the last election.

After the election, I received a letter by registered mail notifying me that I was being investigated for that book. Trudeau’s elections commissioner claimed it was an illegal campaign activity and demanded that I submit to an interrogation.

So I went to Elections Canada’s Ottawa headquarters last week, where I was grilled for an hour by two 30-year veterans of the RCMP and they refused to rule out a police raid on Rebel News headquarters!

Except they didn’t know I videotaped the whole thing.

Here, take a look:

Now, the government says I’m guilty for two reasons:

• Because I chose to publish my Trudeau book during the election; and
• Because I refused to “register” my book with the government

But if those are crimes, then I’m guilty — except this is Canada, not North Korea. And writing books about politicians isn’t a crime.

And then there’s the small detail that 23 other authors published books about Trudeau during the election. But not a single one of them is being investigated by Trudeau’s staff.

This is Trudeau’s latest attempt to censor his toughest critics, Rebel News. Remember, Trudeau’s hand-picked election debates commission banned our journalists from covering the election debates. We had to go Federal Court, and a judge ordered Trudeau’s commission to let us in. That victory cost us $18,000 in legal fees.

This fight is much bigger — there are no fewer than five government lawyers and investigators assigned to us. They’re taking it very seriously.

So I’ve hired the same young lawyers who beat Trudeau’s election debates commission to represent us again in this fight. In fact, I’m meeting with them later today to strategize on how we’ll fight back and win, just like we did against the debates commission.

There’s a chance that this video of my interrogation is so embarrassing that Trudeau simply drops the case against us. That would be ideal — and we could get back to doing our journalism.

But this video could make Trudeau angrier than ever, and more vengeful. This could drag out for years, fed by the unlimited resources of the state, to grind us down.

But I’m up for it:

• I’ve got a great legal team.
• I’ve got a great case — writing books isn’t illegal in Canada, yet.
• And most importantly, I’ve got you on my side.

CAN YOU HELP US FIGHT BACK?

I’m not kidding. There’s no way I could pay our free speech legal fees without the help of you and thousands of other supporters like you.

So if you use the form below, you can chip in, whether it’s $10, $100 or even more — we’d truly appreciate it!

I promise to keep you updated every step of the way. And I’ll have a new video up about this later this week.

It’s up to you and me to fight back since no-one “official” will fight for us!

Ezra Levant (December 31, 2020): Just before Christmas, Justin Trudeau’s lawyers made a shocking decision — a decision that must have been approved right from the top.

They decided to investigate me and Rebel News for publishing and promoting my book, “The Libranos: What the Media isn’t telling you about Justin Trudeau’s Corruption”.

I’m being investigated by the government for criticizing the government.

I received the threat letter just hours ago — sent by registered mail, designed to hit me right between the eyes over the Christmas holidays.

I really can’t believe it. Here, you can read Trudeau’s full threat letter for yourself!

Commissioner-of-Canada-Elections-file-2019-0752-dragged

The election has been over for more than two months. So why now?

I think Trudeau is still angry that we beat his lawyers in court back in October — you’ll remember, Trudeau’s hand-picked debates commission banned our reporters from covering the debates. But after an emergency hearing, the Federal Court of Canada ordered Trudeau’s commission to let us in.

It was an amazing David versus Goliath victory — our two young lawyers beat five senior government lawyers sent by Trudeau.

This latest threat letter was obviously a kind of revenge — and it was timed to land right now, while Trudeau is on a private jet holiday in Costa Rica, far from any reporters who might ask him about prosecuting authors.

The letter was signed by Mylène Gigou, director of investigations for Elections Canada. Her letter suggests there is a whole team of investigators who have been assigned to my case. She’s threatening me with an investigation, prosecution and huge fines.

Here’s my attempt to explain it all in video:

Read the letter above; Gigou offers me a kind of plea bargain. She says that if I cooperate with her, she’ll go easy on me — the fine will be lower than if I choose to fight for my freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

What do you think I should do?

  • Should I take the deal?
  • Should I apologize to Trudeau for writing a book critical of him during an election?
  • Should I promise to be more like Aaron Wherry — who actually wrote news reports for the CBC about Trudeau’s fancy socks?
  • Should I sign up for the media bail-out like John Ivison?
  • Should I just pay the $5,000 and promise not to call Trudeau corrupt anymore?

I’m kidding — you know me better than that. I’ll never bow down to Trudeau, ever.

We beat them in court when they tried to ban us from the debates. And we’re going to beat them in court now.

Trudeau obviously needs a reminder that just because 33% of Canadians voted for him — the lowest ever for a majority government in Canada — doesn’t mean he gets to take away our freedom of the press.

In fact, scrutiny of him is more important than ever.

So I’ve spoken to the two lawyers who beat Trudeau last time, and they’ve agreed to help us fight back. Obviously it’s going to cost a lot more than the $5,000 to apologize to Trudeau and settle with the prosecutors. When Alberta’s disgraced elections commissioner went after our reporter Sheila Gunn Reid for the exact same thing — publishing a book criticizing Rachel Notley —  they eventually dropped the charges, but not before it cost us $70,000-plus.

I think that’s what Trudeau is doing — trying to wear us down, both financially and psychologically.

Well, there’s no denying it will cost us money. But, as God is my witness, I swear to you that we will never stop speaking freely, and criticizing Trudeau and any other politicians we like. They will literally have to throw us in jail — and even then, you can better believe we won’t shut up.

We know how Trudeau thinks.

He believes that if he can shut me up —  and Rebel News, his biggest critic — then he can shut anybody up. He’s already got 99% of the Media Party in the palm of his hand. We’re one of the few hold-outs.

And if he can break us, he thinks he can break anyone.

Well, we won’t break.

Please make a donation below to help us cover the legal fees. I promise I’ll fight and fight and fight till we win.

Yours truly,

Ezra Levant

P.S. Fighting against the government feels like David versus Goliath. And it is. But we won last time — and we’re using the same excellent young lawyers. And Trudeau is clearly breaking the law — I mean, really: censoring a book? I really think we can win. Please click below to help chip in if you can.
