A Swift Current business owner and his company are facing a total of 16 charges after allegedly making two foreign workers pay for employment.

Saskatchewan's Ministry of Immigration and Career Training says a numbered company and the owner who operates the Husky Travel Centre in Swift Current have each been charged with eight offences related to the treatment of foreign workers.

The charges include allegedly taking unfair advantage of a foreign national's trust and charging a foreign worker a fee or expense in exchange for employment.

The alleged offences occurred between September 2023 and August 2025. The allegations have not been proven in court.

The owner is expected to appear in court Wednesday in Swift Current.

Half of the eight charges facing both the owner and company were laid under Saskatchewan's updated immigration legislation passed in 2024, which allows courts to impose tougher penalties for violations involving foreign workers.

The case comes just days after another Saskatchewan employer was penalized for charging a foreign worker for employment.

Dhyan Jeny Enterprises, which operates a Guac Mexi Grill franchise in Moose Jaw, pleaded guilty last week to charging a foreign worker a fee or expense for a job.

The company was fined $7,000 and ordered to repay $12,000 to the worker.

A lawyer representing Dhyan Jeny said the company does not plan to employ foreign workers in the future and will comply with restrictions imposed by the restaurant's franchisor.

Guac Mexi Grill said in a statement that franchisees are expected to uphold company standards and that it was reviewing the case to determine what action could be taken under its franchise agreement.
