Teen-organized vigil for Charlie Kirk overrun by activists chanting he's 'better off dead'

The vigil, held on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery, drew roughly 70 attendees and was organized by a teenager working with a slate of municipal school board candidates.

A vigil marking the anniversary of Charlie Kirk's murder was disrupted in Vancouver by pro-Palestinian demonstrators and self-described "unmarked grave" activists, according to Rebel News reporter Drea Humphrey, who covered the event and says she has since faced racist and threatening messages online.

The incident was discussed on Friday's Rebel Roundup livestream, where hosts Sheila Gunn Reid and Drea said they were disturbed that a peaceful memorial, organized by a 13-year-old, was overtaken by activists shouting slogans celebrating Kirk's death.

Drea said the vigil, held on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery, drew roughly 70 attendees and was organized by a teenager working with municipal school board candidates. She said activists falsely claimed she had organized the event and accused her of being a residential school denier.

"It seems like they just fabricated a reason to go hate on Charlie Kirk and what he stood for," Drea said.

Drea noted that flags told their own story at the gathering, with Canadian, Israeli and Free Iran flags present at the vigil, while the counter-protesters carried Palestinian flags and none from Canada. She said Vancouver police deserved credit for keeping the groups separated with barriers.

She described chants from the counter-protesters celebrating Kirk's death, including references to him being shot in the neck.

"There's no one, there's no politician, there's no one where you would catch me going out there [to protest a vigil]," Drea said.

Drea said she required three security guards for the assignment after receiving threats she described as unusually violent, including racist remarks and comments about her family.

"Usually trans people have attacked me. But, you know, these threats were just so violent," she said. "These people are not well."

Sheila said the abuse aimed at Drea went further than she initially let on, including racial slurs. "They were vicious. They were violent," she said.

The hosts also praised the teenage vigil organizer, Daniel, for responding to threats against him with composure rather than anger, saying he encouraged people to turn to their faith rather than retaliate.

"His parents did a great job on him," Sheila said.

Please help us protect our journalists!

Rebel News refuses to give up — even as censorship grows and our journalists face real-world threats simply for doing their jobs.

We take no government grants, which means the cost of protecting our reporters from Antifa thugs, extremist activists, and hostile mobs falls entirely on our supporters.

From Montreal to Vancouver, and around the world, our journalists and videographers now require professional security teams just to report safely, because police too often won’t intervene. These costs are significant, but they are essential if we are to keep covering the stories the establishment media won’t touch, defend free speech in Canada — and do it all while remaining fiercely independent.

Your support helps keep our journalists safe and our mission alive. Thank you!

Drea you are so courageous!! I applaud what you do & I support it. People who are threatening you are truly evil & likely have MH issues, especially if they think there are bodies buried where there are none, that boys can be girls & girls can be boys. That is pure insanity!!

The money likely went into someone’s pocket due to greed & taking advantage of people who are too stupid to do their own research!!
