A Toronto man who visited the Czech Republic eight times after receiving refugee protection in Canada has had his deportation deferred following an intervention by the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

Roman Slepcsik, 58, was scheduled to be removed on September 25. The committee has asked Canada to pause his deportation while it considers a petition filed on his behalf. The Canada Border Services Agency has deferred his removal until that process is resolved, according to his lawyers, as reported by TorontoToday. The UN has not ruled on the merits of his case.

Slepcsik came to Canada in 1997. His lawyer says his family had been targeted by neo-Nazi skinheads in the Czech Republic. He was granted refugee protection in 1998 and permanent residency in 1999, then lived in Toronto as a carpenter and raised his two daughters here.

But between 2001 and 2021, Slepcsik returned to the Czech Republic eight times, according to a Federal Court ruling. The visits included attending family funerals, caring for his girlfriend and brother, and moving out of an apartment and selling belongings. He travelled using his Czech passport, which he renewed twice after receiving refugee status.

Immigration authorities concluded those actions showed Slepcsik had voluntarily sought the protection of the country he had fled. His refugee protection was ended in 2023, and he consequently lost his permanent resident status under a rule introduced in 2012. The Federal Court upheld the cessation decision in 2025.

Slepcsik’s lawyers argue he did not know returning for family reasons could put his status at risk. His appeal is expected to be heard next year.

Remigration Now!

Goal: 15,000 signatures

Canada’s immigration system must put Canadian citizens, Canadian workers and Canadian values first. Temporary foreign workers and international students should be required to leave when their permits expire, citizenship should not be granted to those who support terrorism or reject Canada’s laws and values, and the federal government must reverse the damaging consequences of unchecked mass migration. We call on Canada’s leaders to restore order, enforce the rules, and to protect Canadian jobs and communities.

Good question, Bernhard. We should quit the UN but our European prime minister loves internationalism.
