Victoria land grab? Prime public land could soon be signed over to five First Nations

The Eby and Carney governments are negotiating a treaty that could transfer prime Victoria public lands out of provincial ownership and into First Nation treaty lands.

The B.C. NDP government, with the support of the federal Liberal government, is in the final stages of negotiating a treaty that could transfer some of Victoria's most valuable publicly owned waterfront properties into settlement lands governed outside municipal zoning and city bylaws.

According to provincial treaty maps, the proposed agreement with the Te'Mexw Treaty Association includes lands such as Discovery Island Marine Provincial Park, historic Hatley Park, home to Royal Roads University and Hatley Castle, waterfront property across from Bastion Square in Victoria's Inner Harbour, and a provincially owned waterfront parcel adjacent to the B.C. legislature.

The province says the negotiations are part of advancing reconciliation under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Critics, however, argue the agreement is part of a broader pattern of governments quietly negotiating away public lands and Aboriginal title with little public awareness or debate.

The proposed Victoria treaty follows several other major land and title agreements in British Columbia, including the Haida Gwaii title agreement, the Musqueam Nation's aboriginal title recognition in Metro Vancouver, and ongoing negotiations with the Tahltan Nation that could affect roughly 11% of the province.

    The corrupt, debt-fued Liberal idiocracy is confiscating guns, not because of safety, but because a day will come when non- first-immigrant familiess say enough, I will protect my land. Does the US own the moon because they arrived first, no moon boundaries, no moon laws?

    I wonder why it takes so many canadians a year or two or more to catch on they’re being laughed at. Maybe they should of paid more attention back around 2017 when a number of people were trying to warn the masses about UNDRIP. A lot were warning about it would create a divide between the indigenous people and most all other Canadians. Hopefully Canadians including the indigenous people see what harm this will creating.

    This is NOT reconciliation. This race-based land grab is an affront to all taxpaying citizens who own property legally. I’m fed up with the socialist/communist fixation on destroying our culture. Without Christian values, many native folks would have had a far harder lifestyle.

    Maybe I’m just too old . I like Drea reporting just it seems she needs a little more pizzas . Off set questions on her view or camera person offering the do the sign language for the viewers.
