Former Liberal MP Shaun Chen says health issues stemming from an October 2025 car accident left him unable to regularly travel to Ottawa — but just months before announcing his resignation, Chen made a trip to China.

The former Scarborough North MP stepped down on Aug. 15, citing “significant health issues” resulting from the crash. However, investigative journalist Andy Lee, known as @RealAndyLeeShow on X, uncovered evidence that Chen travelled to China in March.

Lee says she first became suspicious after seeing Chen in videos circulating on the Chinese social media platform WeChat,

“When he came out saying that he was unable to work due to his commuting requirements to Ottawa, it didn’t make a lot of sense.”

According to Lee, Chinese government readouts describe the trip as involving an official delegation, while she has been unable to locate corresponding Canadian records.

But Lee says the story goes much deeper than Chen simply travelling abroad.

Her investigation uncovered videos connecting Chen with a prominent Chinese musician and influencer involved with the Hakka community, of which Chen is also a member. Lee says Chinese government documents indicate Hakka cultural outreach is being used to promote business connected to Chinese ports.

One port appearing in the material, she said, is located in a province associated with shipbuilding and joint military exercises involving Russia.

Lee also pointed to documents she says connect the cultural initiative to China’s Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and the United Front Work Department — an organization long scrutinized over Beijing’s foreign influence operations.

“We didn’t elect these guys to be brand ambassadors for a Chinese port,” Lee said, noting footage of Canadian politicians has appeared in promotional material.

Lee stressed that doing business with China or celebrating Chinese culture is not itself the issue. Rather, she argues Canadians deserve to know what their elected representatives were doing, who organized the trip and whether Canadian officials authorized or knew about their activities — something most voters can surely agree on.

Chen has indicated he now intends to pursue a seat on Toronto City Council.

“I’m pretty sure Shaun Chen spoke more in public in China on that one trip than he ever has in our House of Commons for his voters,” Lee said.

“This trip did nothing to serve Canadians.”

    Dont forget CCP is well documented that when influencial people go to China they will do the honeypot scheme on them. What this entails is putting in a sex trade worker into their bedrooms, fully filmed, and black mail them. Any influencial person going over to China that comes back and has drastically changed, this is probably what happened to them over there.

    Remember that China weaponizes everything. So cultural exchanges are clandestine spying missions. Shaun Chen was just one of many spies and influencers influencing our nation. The communists are far more cunning than our domesticated politicians.

    Natalie Winters did a great report and released a list of lsm journalists and influencers that took free vacations and tours paid for by the CCP. Then shortly after they released puff pieces about China. Might get some leads or ideas from her Substack on this issue.
