Who's telling the truth about the trade deal? I asked the U.S. Ambassador to Canada

I sat down with Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, and put Carney's public excuses to him one at a time to see if they held up.
You'll remember that Carney said the deal died because the Americans were attacking the French language and Quebec culture. "Unacceptable," he said. He'd never allow it.

I think that Trump’s behaviour and insults got short shrift, though. It is the most significant factor in hardening Canadian resolve. He may not take us seriously, but we are really not accustomed to being pushed around by bullies. Americans fought beside us in enough conflicts to know that.
I found the idea of “fortress North America” very interesting, but it has been poorly explored on both sides of the discussion. If that is what Trump really has in mind (I am skeptical), it is worth expressing clearly and expanding upon. I will never support a 51st state (my UEL family made that decision a long time ago), but our relationship with America and Americans is something we really value. A properly explained context of “fortress North America,” and a little respect, would be nice, though. If that happens, once the rhetoric settles down, there could still be a deal that works for us all. -

Unfortunately, if I tried to explain this to someone, I’d be called a conspiracy theorist. (Yeah, the same thing happened during the Trudeau “Plague”. How did that turn out?)
