Help us pay for the lawyers — and get Ezra into both courtrooms
Rebel News is sending Ezra Levant back to Ireland this week for two trials in five days. We are asking you to pay for the lawyers, and for the trip.
Two men, two courtrooms, five days
Kirk Loco is charged under a Troubles-era anti-terror law for reposting a neighbourhood warning about a migrant who exposed himself on a bus. His hearing is Friday, October 23, at Bray District Court.
Hugh Fagan is charged with a public order offence for sitting in silence in the Wexford town square with homemade signs. His trial is Tuesday, October 27, at Wexford District Court.
The man on the bus wasn't charged. The people who scream at Hugh every week have never been charged. The two men who spoke were.
Why they need lawyers you pay for
Ireland's legal aid system pushes defendants to plead guilty and move on. In a political case, pleading guilty means surrendering your beliefs. Both men refused. So Rebel News hired them a legal team willing to fight these cases on principle, in open court: Laoise de Brún BL, a Dublin barrister, and Padraig Langsch, a solicitor.
Nobody in Ireland is pushing back against these prosecutions in an organized way, and the big Irish media cheer them on. So we are. If the state can shut up a quiet man with signs in a tourist town, it can shut up anyone.
What it costs
Hugh's lawyers charge 10,000 euros for his case, all in.
Kirk's defence is ongoing and needs senior counsel, because a conviction could mean prison.
Then there is the trip. Ezra's economy flight to Dublin, a modest hotel and the trips to Bray and Wexford come to about 2,000 euros. He is going without a videographer and filming his own reports to keep that number down. He'll be in the public gallery for both hearings, live-tweeting from inside, and on the streets of both towns talking to the people who live there.
Altogether, we need to crowdfund about 7,000 euros.
Why Rebel News
Unlike the mainstream media, Rebel News doesn't take a dime from the government or from unscrupulous Big Tech or Big Pharma advertisers. We rely entirely on crowdfunding to sustain our independent journalism. Will you chip in $100, $50 or even just $20 to support our mission to tell the other side of the story?
Where your money goes
Every dollar goes to the hard costs: the lawyers' fees first, then the flight, the hotel and the ground travel. If there is a surplus, Rebel News applies it to other free speech cases in Ireland. Ezra's reports from both courtrooms will be posted at IrishFreeSpeech.com the same day.
You don't have to agree with what Hugh or Kirk said to agree that they have the right to say it. And if the Irish state is prosecuting them, they have the right to a good lawyer. Can you please help pay for one?
