Irish Free Speech (Legal Fund)
Ireland’s First “Fake News” Prosecution
Kirk Loco, an ordinary Irish citizen, is being prosecuted — not for violence, threats, or harassment — but for posting a tweet.
Kirk has become the first and only person ever charged under Ireland’s so-called “fake news” law, a statute originally passed nearly 50 years ago to combat terrorism. It was never meant to police online speech — yet that’s exactly how it’s being used now.
The government claims his post was “misinformation.” Instead of ignoring it or debating it, they chose to prosecute one man, seemingly to make an example of him.
Kirk is charged under Section 12A of the Criminal Justice Act (1976) — legislation created during the Troubles to stop violent extremism, not political dissent.
If the state can stretch anti-terror laws to punish speech it dislikes, no opinion is safe.
Legal fight for justice
Ireland’s legal aid system often pressures defendants to plead guilty and move on. But in a political case, pleading guilty means surrendering your beliefs.
Kirk refuses to give in; he’s promised to fight, and we’ve helped him secure a legal team willing to fight with him. Kirk is now represented by lawyers willing to fight this case on principle, not convenience, and challenge Ireland’s growing culture of censorship in open court.
This legal fight is expensive, so we promised Kirk we would ask the Rebel audience to help crowdfund his legal fight to challenge censorship through the courts.
This is the first case of its kind — but it won’t be the last unless people stand up now.
At Rebel News, we believe censorship spreads when it goes unchallenged. If the government can criminalize a tweet, it can criminalize anything.
Please donate if you can, and help stop this dangerous precedent before it becomes the norm. Your donation helps ensure this case is fought in court — not quietly pleaded away.
Now is the time to defend the right of Irish citizens to speak freely.
