Save Danny Tommo!

Danny Tommo was arrested in England.

You may know him — he’s the man who has spent this summer on the beaches, the docks and the water of the south coast trying to stop the small boats. He has been Tommy Robinson’s key ally for years.

What happened in the English Channel?

Here’s what happened. On Tuesday afternoon, Danny was in a speedboat in the English Channel, livestreaming. A migrant dinghy had just come across from France — thirty-three hours at sea, about fifty people aboard, shadowed the whole way by the French coastguard. It appears that the migrants had been taken off by the French rescue boat and two RNLI lifeboats onto a Border Force cutter. A French rescue worker was still on the dinghy. Danny leaned over with a knife and cut it.

I’m not going to pretend that isn’t serious. It is. Police say the arrest is for “criminal damage” and “recklessly endangering life.” I’ve been told the second one can carry up to life in prison in the UK.

Danny asked me to help him

Danny asked me to help him — through Tommy. He asked because he saw what we did for Tommy last year: when the regime charged Tommy over the St. Pancras train station attack, you and I crowdfunded his lawyers and the charges were dropped. Then Tommy beat the Terrorism Act charge outright.

So I said yes. I’ve reached out to a senior criminal lawyer in London.

Here’s why I said I’d help Danny Tommo.

Every one of the fifty-odd people on that dinghy is going to get a lawyer. A British taxpayer-funded lawyer, through legal aid, to argue their asylum claim. They’ll get a hotel room, three meals, a phone and a lawyer.

The people smugglers who sold them the boat get lawyers.

The French rescue crew that escorted them into British waters — nobody is arresting them.

And the one man who tried to stop the boat — he gets the cell. And the mob wants him to get nothing else. Look at the tweet that started this, from a left-wing account, seen 4.7 million times: “He’s out of control and needs arresting.” Twenty-four hours later, the police obliged.

I don’t have to agree with everything Danny did on Tuesday to know this: in a free country, a man accused of a crime gets a lawyer.

That’s not a favour. That’s the whole point of the system. Every criminal migrant gets a lawyer. Surely a man fighting for his country deserves a lawyer too.

Help us give Danny his day in court

That’s what I’m asking you to help with.

I don’t have an estimate of what this will cost. I didn’t for Tommy either — it depends on how badly the state wants to go after him. With Tommy, the answer turned out to be: very badly.

I’ll tell you the lawyer’s name and the first court date the moment I have them confirmed, and I’ll fight like hell, like I did for Tommy.

P.S. I know what the media will say about Danny — they’ll say he’s a thug, they’ll dig up his past, they’ll say he doesn’t deserve help. Fine. Let them say it. The question isn’t whether Danny is a saint. It’s whether the same police who can’t stop a single boat can find the time to lock up the one man who tried.
