Ticket dropped: Police accost Rebel News reporter while covering Trudeau

During Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's travels, the PM is always accompanied by a security escort from the RCMP and local police, all at the taxpayers' expense of course. However, Trudeau's security has taken extra precautions for another type of threat — questions from independent journalists, like us here at Rebel News.

An incident exemplifying this occurred during his visit to Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières on January 18, 2023. Upon the Rebel News Quebec team's arrival, it seemed that the police had focused on us and our vehicle. As we entered the parking lot, a police car followed us until we reached the UQTR parking lot.

Reviewing the footage would reveal that we never left our vehicle, but the police appeared to take measures to prevent us from entering the premises, purportedly following Justin Trudeau's directives. They scrutinized the press credentials and media affiliation of our journalistic team, engaged in what seemed like journalist profiling, and impeded press freedom.

This incident sheds light on concerns about a potentially politicized police force, prioritizing political interests over citizens. Despite following instructions to relocate our vehicle, we received a fine by mail 11 months later, allegedly for parking in a prohibited area – the same location where we had faced police intimidation. This fine appeared as a dubious attempt at intimidation and punishment for fulfilling our duties as independent journalists.

The fine was contested, by pleading not guilty to expose the alleged abuse of police power. Two weeks later, the municipal court informed us that, after reviewing the ticket, the city prosecutor had cancelled the fine.

This case underscores the importance of addressing potential abuses of power and emphasizes the necessity for outlets like Rebel News to safeguard citizens' right to accurate information about current events.
