From lawmaker to lawbreaker!

Independent Ontario MPP Randy Hillier, joined by People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier and Toronto lawyer Rocco Galati, recently staged an event on the lawns of Toronto’s Queen’s Park.

The trio banded together to denounce the provincial government for renewing the Stage 2 lockdowns that are now in place in many parts of the province including Toronto, Ottawa, Peel Region and York Region (with more lockdowns to come elsewhere, according to rumours).

Hillier actually dared law enforcement to arrest him for staging the outdoor event. Given that it was attended by more than 25 people, he potentially faced a fine of up to $100,000!

Hillier also called Premier Doug Ford “dodgy” and “a coward.”

Alas, Toronto police and bylaw decided not to grant Hillier’s wish and did not slap him with any fines. Hillier said he had wanted to fight the fine in court to hopefully prove that it was unconstitutional.

Nevertheless, it was fascinating to see Hillier clamour for a charge given that as an MPP, Hillier is someone who would normally be involved in writing laws — not breaking them.

It should be noted that Hillier was removed from the Progressive Conservative caucus last year, and has been a vocal critic of how the government has handled the pandemic.
