Freeland: crying was routine in Trudeau’s cabinet
Chrystia Freeland’s new book says crying was a routine part of Trudeau’s cabinet meetings and that he flew into rages over words like “crazy,” and how he obsessed over the details of his own public appearances but couldn’t be bothered with the details of trade negotiations with the Trump White House.
Chrystia Freeland has a new book, and it paints a picture of Justin Trudeau's cabinet that Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle found more fitting for a preschool than a government.
Among the claims made in Unreliable Boyfriend was how crying was a routine part of cabinet meetings, and Trudeau would fly into fits of rage when colleagues used words like "crazy" instead of "bananas."
Lise wasn't surprised by the tone policing. "Of course he would be one of the tone police," she said on Tuesday's Rebel Roundup. "And the crazy thing is, I don't have any confidence that it's not still like that right now."
Sheila noted that, according to the Hamilton Spectator's review of the book, the target in one case was an unnamed, very progressive female cabinet minister. "When someone professes that you are a male feminist, I'm just going to assume instantly that you're abusive in some way or another to women," Sheila said.
Lise pointed to Jody Wilson-Raybould as proof of the pattern. "Whenever he met a strong, principled woman, he found a way to get her eliminated from the Liberal Party," she said.
Sheila had little sympathy for anyone involved. "You guys are cabinet ministers, the most powerful people in the country," she said. "Why in God's name are you people being reduced to tears because someone tone polices you? Everybody involved here is just a special level of pathetic."
The book, as described by the Spectator, also says Trudeau was deeply involved in the details of his own public appearances, from the 2018 trip to India onward, but didn't dive into Canada's negotiating position during trade talks with the Trump White House. Freeland says she could count on one hand the number of one-on-one meetings she had with him in nearly a decade, despite serving as his finance minister and deputy prime minister.
Both hosts asked why Freeland waited until now.
When Wilson-Raybould spoke out, Sheila said, the Liberals "drove the bus over her a couple of times," because they were "more worried about their jobs than doing their jobs."
And with Freeland now working for the government of Ukraine, Sheila asked, "Where's the risk for her in speaking up now? There is none," replied Lise.
The same people, the hosts argued, are behind the recession and stalled trade talks. "These same doofs that are still there crapped the bed 10 years ago and continue to crap the bed," Lise said. "I say we make them sleep in it one of these days, Canada."
