Enough is enough: the Australian government needs to act now amid a chilling escalation of antisemitic terror.

On 14 December 2025, during a Chanukah celebration at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, a horrific terrorist attack unfolded that will forever stain our nation’s history. Two gunmen opened fire on a peaceful Jewish festival being held for the first night of Hanukkah, killing at least 15 innocent people and injuring dozens more. One of the attackers was killed and another is in custody as authorities continue their investigation. Police have officially declared the incident a terrorist attack on Australia’s Jewish community.

This astonishing act of violence struck not only at a community gathering, but at the heart of who we are as Australians: targeting Jewish families, elders and children celebrating the festival of lights.

From Melbourne to Sydney, Jewish communities in Australia have experienced a disturbing surge in antisemitism — from vile protests and public displays of hatred to arson attacks and now, mass violence on one of our nation’s most beloved beaches. Our politicians have offered words, but words alone are no longer enough.

One of the most shocking examples of antisemitic hate was the firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Ripponlea, Melbourne: an act of terror that could have been far worse and stands as a harrowing reminder of where unchecked hatred leads.
