Authoritarian China responds to coronavirus outbreak with arrests, quarantines and a massive cover-up
China's coronavirus outbreak has finally gotten bad enough that no-one in the country can ignore it anymore. Their first reaction was probably to ignore it, to cover it up, to downplay it. Out of laziness; out of embarrassment; out of ignorance.
And now, it's about who to blame.
China has spent the first few days of the outbreak arresting people for spreading 'rumours' online and to journalists.
