Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit is investigating after Abbas Hamze allegedly invoked blood libels and warned of the 'annihilation' of Zionists.

A University of Niagara Falls Canada instructor is under investigation by Toronto Police after delivering a speech at Bathurst and Sheppard filled with antisemitic conspiracy theories, including claims about Jews murdering and eating children.

The incident unfolded on August 23 at Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue West, where anti-Israel demonstrators have continued gathering in Toronto’s predominantly Jewish neighbourhood.

Footage circulating online shows Abbas Hamze, identified as a sessional faculty member and data analytics instructor at the University of Niagara Falls Canada, addressing demonstrators through a megaphone.

During the speech, Hamze accused “Zionists” of using “black magic,” raping, murdering and eating children, and connected the allegations to Jeffrey Epstein’s island. He described Israel as a “cancerous, false Zionist state” and claimed Jews have repeatedly been expelled from countries throughout history because of their “mischief.”

Hamze also warned people across the street that their “mischief will cause your annihilation” and invoked the historic Khaybar chant, associated with the seventh-century Battle of Khaybar and commonly translated as, “Khaybar, Khaybar, O Jews, the army of Muhammad will return.”

Jewish advocacy organizations condemned the remarks as antisemitic blood libel.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, B’nai Brith Canada and Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center issued a joint statement describing the incident as “blatant antisemitism” and calling for a police investigation and charges where warranted.

Toronto Police subsequently confirmed that its Hate Crime Unit is investigating comments made by a demonstrator in the Bathurst and Sheppard area. Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center has also confirmed it filed a formal criminal complaint.

The University of Niagara Falls Canada has launched its own internal investigation, saying it is aware of a video allegedly involving a sessional faculty member and that the views expressed do not represent the university.

The university said it has “zero tolerance” for discrimination, hate and harassment, but did not comment further because the investigation involves a personnel matter.

As of now, no charges have been publicly announced.

For residents around Bathurst and Sheppard the incident is the latest controversy surrounding demonstrations that have repeatedly descended on the heavily Jewish neighbourhood since 2024.
