Afghan vet to MPs: ‘I don’t believe in Canada anymore’
Sheila Gunn Reid and David Menzies say this is the face of Jason Kenney’s so-called traitors.
On Monday's live stream, Sheila Gunn Reid and David Menzies reacted to a clip of an Alberta veteran's testimony before a House of Commons committee, calling it the answer to those who brand supporters of Western independence as traitors.
Sheila played the testimony of Shane Nedohin, an Afghanistan veteran she said she met at a recent independence rally. Asked by a committee member whether veterans who return to a Canada they no longer recognize are suffering a form of moral injury, Nedohin admitted his answer would not be popular at the table.
"I don't believe in Canada anymore," he said. "I'm an Albertan and I want to leave."

Nedohin said he once believed in Canada and in the mission he fought for in Afghanistan, only to watch the country retaken by the Taliban. He then came home to a government he said was ashamed to put up a war memorial for Afghan veterans, tucking it away behind National Defence Headquarters without inviting anyone to see it. He called that a disgrace and said many fellow veterans feel the same way.
Sheila framed the clip as a response to former premier Jason Kenney and other federalists who, she said, invoke those who fought for Canada to argue against separation. She asked whether Nedohin is a traitor for voting for independence.
David agreed, saying those channelling Remembrance Day to oppose an independent Alberta have no right to assume fallen soldiers would side with them, given what has happened to the country in recent years. What they fought for, he argued, was the free dominion of Canada and its rights and liberties, which he said are now being trampled by censorious thugs.
