Eby suggests U.S. meddling in Alberta referendum, offers no proof
British Columbia's NDP premier says he's concerned about U.S. involvement in Alberta's referendum process.
On Friday's live stream, Sheila Gunn Reid reacted to B.C. Premier David Eby sounding the alarm about possible American involvement in Alberta's independence movement.
Eby suggested last week that the United States is actively interfering in the referendum process, though he offered no evidence to back up the accusation. The RCMP has said it is monitoring for foreign interference in the vote and has found none so far.
Eby pointed to meetings between separatists and American officials, assurances about a post-separation relationship with Washington, and online memes depicting Alberta as the 51st state as the source of his concern. He called the situation "beyond the pale."
"The concern that I have is that the United States is actively involved in and interfering in the referendum, which is like an astonishing thing for me to say," Eby said.
Sheila noted that the vast majority of Alberta independence supporters don't want to join the U.S. "The idea of Alberta trading one overlord for another is sort of on the edges of the independence talk," she said.
"The whole point of Alberta independence is to be independent of Canada but largely of the United States as well," Sheila continued.
"There's no evidence for anything that he's saying. It's not unusual for potentially independent states or states that are to become independent to seek recognitions from other countries," she added.
Sheila also raised legitimate foreign interference concerns that Eby has rarely addressed publicly. These include Chinese Communist Party intimidation of Canadian politicians, Indo-Canadian organized crime networks linked to fentanyl super labs, and assassinations in B.C.

But that’s considered not meddling, is it? -
