Jason Kenney is still 'in denial to this day': Ezra Levant

The former Alberta premier has never taken accountability for what caused his ouster as United Conservative Party leader, blaming the media and conspiracies instead of his own actions.

Ezra Levant says Jason Kenney's latest public comments reveal a former premier who still believes he was undone by what people said about him, rather than by what he did.

On Friday's Rebel Roundup, Ezra replayed a clip of the former Alberta premier and walked through what he called “a look inside his psychology.”

Kenney, Ezra said, was once one of Alberta's most popular premiers, the man who united the Wildrose and Progressive Conservative parties, and one of the most conservative federal cabinet ministers in recent Canadian history. Then, Ezra continued, he “turned into the most brutal enforcer of COVID laws in the country, arrested pastors like no one else did, and then he turned on his own people, calling them yahoos.”

“He feels like he's not premier today, not because of what he did, but because of what other people said about what he did,” Ezra explained.

Ezra noted Kenney has singled out Rebel News, including a billboard Kenney claimed was funded from Alabama, as the reason for his downfall.

“Rebel News is part of the mix,” Ezra said, listing CBC, CTV, Global, the Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, and Calgary Sun and talk radio.

“But for him to say because Rebel News had a billboard on the side of the road... that's why he lost, not by what he did. He's in denial to this day about what he did. He's never apologized for what he did.”

Ezra, who has known both Kenney and Danielle Smith since his university days in Edmonton, then shared what he said Smith told him about taking over the premier's office.

“Jason Kenney refused to participate in the transition process,” shared Ezra. “He was so furious and vicious and vendetta-driven towards Danielle Smith that he would not even put a loyalty and a duty to Albertans first.”

Outgoing leaders routinely brief their successors on live files and looming problems, he said, regardless of personal feelings. “Jason Kenney is the only person I've ever heard of in my life who put his own personal spite ahead of helping the province. And that's a window into who he is.”

Ezra also recalled Kenney once professing not to know what a vaccine passport was, before imposing one “with viciousness.”

“Arresting the pastors is not the problem. It's that Rebel News talked about it. That's the problem,” he said, summarizing Kenney's apparent view. “He's got to come to terms with what he did... Maybe he thinks he can be premier again. I don't think so.”

Rebel Roundup streams live Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. MT / 1 p.m. ET.

I’ve often wondered what changes these people when they get into office. Kenney drives in in his blue Dodge Ram and quickly moves onto the deck of the sky palace. Stephen Harper goes from writing the Alberta Firewall letter to standing on stage with Skid Marx Carnochio praising his phoney investment conference and deriding Alberta independence in favour of continued federalist masochism. Even Preston Manning went from threatening to turn Stornaway into a bowling alley to getting “Ottawashed.” Danielle Smith has gone from being a firebrand with good, conservative values and ideals to standing at the dais behind Skid Marx looking like she wants to fellate him. I used to think it’s because they surrounded themselves with 20 something Poli-Sci grads educated in the finest Marxist traditions. But I think now it’s something more than that. Not since Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan have we had people who governed like they campaigned. Now the world, thank God, has President Trump…and how they hate him for his principles! It’s almost like, I don’t know, it’s a spiritual problem or something.
