While support for Ontario Premier Doug Ford has remained high throughout the pandemic, it was only summer of 2019 when Ford was polling with a 65 per cent negative view from voters. Will these new-found supporters stick by Ford's side when the next election rolls around? Has the premier alienated some of his most loyal, perhaps now-former, supporters?
After kicking Cambridge MPP Belinda Karahalios out of the Progressive Conservative caucus for voting against Bill 195, Belinda and her husband Jim, who was kicked out of the federal Conservative Party, the pair have decided to take matters into their own hands.
Joining Ezra on yesterday's episode of The Ezra Levant Show, Belinda and Jim declared their intentions to start a new conservative party for Ontario, the New Blue Party.
Explaining the reasoning for their decision, Belinda told Ezra:
You know currently Ezra there is no party in the Ontario legislature that is defending the taxpayer, defending places of worship, defending small businesses. None promoting or protecting freedoms or democracy or fighting corruption and that's what the New Blue Party stands for.
When asked if he thought he could be a builder of a new movement, not just a party for people Doug Ford kicked out, Jim told Ezra:
If we weren't builders, Ezra, we wouldn't be in this position. If we were running and finishing last, whether it was Belinda's nomination, me running at a PC convention, or in the federal leadership, they'd ignore us.
[The PC Party] are the ones that are offside and going rogue with just basic democratic things that they promised the members, and we were able to build movements and become a threat and they went after us.
If we weren't builders offering solutions, they would just leave us alone.
