Pierre Poilievre gives unequivocal answer on transgender issue: "No men in women’s spaces, period"
Asked by Rebel News’ Lise Merle about biological males in women’s prisons, the Conservative leader broadened his answer to shelters, bathrooms, change rooms and other female-only spaces: ‘Men are men, women are women.’
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre gave a refreshingly blunt answer when Rebel News’ Lise Merle asked him about keeping biological males out of women's prisons.
Lise bumped into Poilievre as he was preparing to cheer on the Saskatchewan Roughriders and asked him about comments he had made earlier in the week opposing biological males being housed in women's prisons.
“Men are men, women are women,” he told Lise, before broadening his answer well beyond prisons.
Poilievre said men don't belong in women's shelters, bathrooms, change rooms or swimming facilities either.
“No men in women's spaces, period,” Poilievre declared. “Very simple.”
It's a remarkably direct answer on an issue that federal Conservative politicians have historically approached with considerably more caution.
For years, gender identity has presented an awkward political balancing act for Canada's Conservatives. Positions that are popular among much of the party's grassroots can quickly provoke outrage from progressive politicians, activists and much of the legacy media.
But that calculation appears to be changing.
The debate over biological males competing in women's sports has increasingly pushed the issue into mainstream politics, and Conservatives have become much more comfortable publicly defending sex-based distinctions.
Poilievre's answer to Lise suggests he's willing to apply that principle much more broadly.
She didn't just get him to oppose biological males in women's sports or prisons. Poilievre voluntarily extended his position to a range of female-only spaces — and did so without the sort of qualifications or carefully calibrated language politicians often use when discussing transgender issues.
Lise couldn't resist pointing out that she would have liked to hear Conservatives saying it this plainly before the last election.
Poilievre pushed back, saying, “I think we did actually say that.”
“Louder, louder,” Lise replied.
