Oklahoma Governor offers refuge to Jewish Canadians fleeing antisemitism

Gov. Kevin Stitt says his state would welcome Jewish families as Canada's antisemitism crisis deepens.

Oklahoma Republican Governor Kevin Stitt says his state would welcome Jewish refugees who legally leave Canada for the United States, citing rising antisemitism north of the border.

In a letter getting renewed attention dated July 22, 2026, Stitt wrote to U.S. President Donald Trump stating that Oklahoma stands firmly against antisemitism and supports Jewish communities facing persecution worldwide. He noted that reports of increasing violence, intimidation and discrimination targeting Jewish communities since October 7, 2023, are deeply troubling, and singled out Canada as a Western nation where such hostility has taken hold.

The letter states that should Jewish families lawfully come to the United States in search of safety, Oklahoma would proudly welcome them.

The offer follows Prime Minister Mark Carney's admission that Canada has a serious antisemitism problem. According to Fox News, Canada has recorded nearly 7,000 antisemitic incidents in a country of roughly 41 million people, compared to fewer than 6,300 in the United States, which has a population of more than 342 million.

Trump has also amplified a proposal from the National Association of Christian Lawmakers urging the State Department and Department of Homeland Security to use existing refugee and visa authorities to help relocate more than 2,000 Jewish Canadians who have expressed interest in leaving.

Synagogues and Jewish schools in Canada have been repeatedly targeted since the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and weekly demonstrations featuring chants calling for genocide demonstrate the deteriorating climate for Jewish Canadians.
