Police and fire officials are investigating a blaze that caused extensive damage to Vernon Alliance Church in British Columbia’s Okanagan region.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services responded to the church in the 2600 block of 43rd Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31, after receiving reports of thick black smoke and flames coming from the building’s roof.

Approximately 35 firefighters from Vernon, BX-Swan Lake, Coldstream and Armstrong-Spallumcheen battled the fire into the evening. Crews remained at the scene overnight to extinguish hot spots.

The fire caused substantial damage, particularly to the church’s office and hallway wing. However, a firewall helped prevent the flames from spreading further into the sanctuary.

Two custodians were reportedly inside the building when the fire began, but both escaped safely. No injuries were reported.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services and the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP returned to the scene Tuesday to investigate the cause, which had not been determined.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the firefighters, our regional fire service partners, the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, FortisBC, BC Hydro, and all those who worked tirelessly to limit the loss as much as possible,” Fire Chief David Lind said.

The church announced that its building and offices would remain closed while inspectors assess the full extent of the damage.

“The fire at Vernon Alliance Church is now out. We are incredibly thankful that everyone is safe,” the church said in an online update.

Church leaders said ministry work would continue and expressed hope that the congregation could gather at another location for its next Sunday service.
