Sophie Grégoire Trudeau criticizes Justin Trudeau
The former prime minister’s ex-wife says she knew the job came with the territory, but her own time in the public spotlight, from a controversial appearance at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event to her continued use of the Trudeau name, deserves scrutiny too.
Sophie Grégoire Trudeau seems ready to reflect on the realities of life alongside a prime minister. But if she wants to revisit Justin Trudeau’s years in office, her own time in the spotlight should be part of the conversation.
“I knew it was his job, but come on,” she said of her former husband’s role as prime minister.
That complaint is worth considering alongside the public profile she built during those same years. Grégoire Trudeau was not simply watching Canadian politics from the sidelines. She appeared at public events, took on a prominent role as the prime minister’s wife and became a public figure in her own right.
One appearance that drew ridicule was her performance at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event. A satirical video by Gavin McInnes mocked the performance and questioned why she had been invited to take part.
Justin Trudeau’s own record also remains under scrutiny, including the Aga Khan ethics controversy, in which the federal ethics commissioner found that he violated conflict-of-interest rules.
The Trudeau years brought plenty of public scrutiny, and neither half of the former couple was immune to it.
If Sophie Grégoire Trudeau wants to look back on her ex-husband’s time in office, there is no reason her own public record should be off limits.
