A university should be able to handle an argument. Yesterday at the University of Calgary, an event inviting students to debate controversial ideas ended with a masked individual pouring water over Dr. Tom Flanagan’s head, soaking Rebel News reporter Drea Humphrey beside him.

Tonight on The Gunn Show, Drea joins Sheila Gunn Reid to explain what happened when an afternoon of civil discussion descended into shouting, intimidation and police involvement.

Hosted by Canadian Students for Free Speech, a project of The Democracy Fund, the event invited students to challenge Humphrey and Flanagan on whether residential schools constituted genocide. According to organizers, respectful exchanges continued for roughly ninety minutes before accusations of white supremacy and demands that the speakers leave campus escalated into the water incident.

Private security detained the individual and handed him to police. Organizers ended the event for safety reasons when Drea and Flanagan were taken to a safe room.

Drea gives her firsthand account of the confrontation, the students who came prepared to debate, and those who apparently thought a water bottle was a winning argument.

We’ll discuss what this episode reveals about campus free speech, the cost of hosting open debate, and why controversial questions deserve answers instead of attempts to drive speakers away.

Ask people who SURVIVED public school of the 50’s and 60’s what conditions were like back then (strap for truancy, hit with yardstick, chalk and board brush thrown at them, sex assault in some private /religious schools) We should not compare conditions of the past with today.

Just watch. The police will file no assault charges. Kick that “it person” out of the school and ban “it” from all other post secondaries.
