You’ve probably heard the shocking news from Sydney, Australia, one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

At Sydney’s world-famous Bondi Beach, a crowd of hundreds of Jews gathered to celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah. But two heavily-armed Muslim migrants were there, also, and they proceeded to shoot dozens of Jews, killing at least 11 and wounding 29 more. It was a massacre. In Australia of all places.

Our Australian bureau chief, Avi Yemini, interviewed a witness who was there.

Australia isn’t a country you might normally associate with terrorism. But neither is Canada. In fact, the two countries are remarkably similar in their approach to Islamic extremism:

Like Canada, Australia has had an open-borders policy towards immigrants, bringing in hundreds of thousands from the most antisemitic, extremist, backwaters in the world — including Pakistan, where one of the murderers today was from. None of these migrants is vetted for their anti-Jewish, anti-Christian, and anti-Western views.

Like Canada, Australia’s government and media have tolerated public expressions not only of deep antisemitic hatred, but of support for violent terrorism, including massive marches in support of Hamas, and chants calling for a worldwide antisemitic pogrom, to “globalize the Intifada”. So-called “hate speech” laws are never used against Islamists; they’re reserved for “right-wingers” who speak out against Islamists.

And, like Canada, Australia has publicly aligned itself with the terrorists, unilaterally declaring support for Palestinian “sovereignty” under its current Hamas leadership, with no conditions — a symbolic move for which Hamas publicly thanked Australia and Canada. It was an unmistakable signal that Australia and Canada are happy to deal with murderous terrorist regimes.

So I ask again: if those conditions were sufficient for a terrorist attack in Sydney, why wouldn’t they be sufficient for a terrorist attack in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa or other Canadian cities?

And there’s one more thing I’ve got to mention: in Australia, like in Canada, it’s very difficult for law-abiding people to arm themselves with firearms. News reports say that there were half a dozen private security guards at the Bondi Beach event, but that they were unarmed. What’s the use of that?

In fact, eye-witness reports say that Sydney police arrived on the scene, but instead of immediately engaging with the terrorists, they hid out of fear. (It took a local bystander to rush one of the terrorists, grabbing his gun.)

I deeply fear what is to come in Canada. We’ve already seen plenty of dry runs. Antisemitic crimes — and I mean real crimes, not just feelings crimes — are so common, they no longer even make the news. One Jewish girls' school in Toronto has been attacked on three separate occasions by gunfire. A synagogue in north Toronto has been vandalized literally ten times.

And every week, a group of Hamas supporters drive into the heart of a Jewish neighbourhood, right in the middle of the day, and walk through residential streets screaming at every Jew they can find. Police don’t stop them — they actually escort them.

Like Australia, Canada is known as a soft touch for terrorism. We refuse to criminalize terrorist groups like the Muslim Brotherhood — even though the United States is doing so, and other countries, like the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, have already done so. We know that there are hundreds of Iranian agents operating freely in Canada. And we’ve had our share of terrorist attacks — including an ISIS gunman bursting into Parliament itself in a hail of gunfire. In the past dozen years we’ve seen:

• Muslim convert Ahmad Rouleau killed Canadian Forces warrant officer Patrice Vincent, by ramming him with his car
   
• ISIS terrorist Michael Zehaf-Bibeau murdered Corporal Nathan Cirillo, and then stormed Parliament
   
• Somali extremist Abdulahi Sharif stabbed Edmonton police officer Mike Chernyk, and then rammed a car into four bystanders

And then there are the terrorist plots that were foiled, from the Toronto 18 bomb plot to the VIA Rail plot.

These are just the cases that the “authorities” can’t deny are Islamic by nature. Most terrorist attacks are simply called crimes or “mental illness”.

So what happens now?

Nothing, of course. Mark Carney is continuing Justin Trudeau’s policy of mass immigration, including from Pakistan, Somalia, Afghanistan and, incredibly, from terrorist-infested Gaza itself.

Politicians will say they “stand with” the Jews, but they won’t — they literally won’t, as many politicians now refuse to attend Jewish events (as opposed to Israeli events), because their new antisemitic vote base won’t tolerate it. Toronto’s mayor is particularly bad for this.

And Jews in Canada — like Jews in Australia — will continue to be completely helpless. Not a single synagogue, school or Jewish community centre in Canada has an armed guard. They’re sitting ducks, thanks to gun control that only applies to law-abiding citizens, not criminals or terrorists.

I’m deeply worried about Canada. Not just for the Jews, but for all of us.

They say if you don’t change direction, you’ll probably end up where you’re heading. I’ve been to Europe enough to know what that looks like, when it comes to mass immigration and Islamic extremism.

Canada used to be the place people came to be safe, free and prosperous. We’re losing that, and I think it’s going to get a lot worse. It might already be too late, but if we’re to have any chance, we have to immediately stop immigration from terrorist-infested countries.
