Sign our petition to support Alberta's coal industry!
Steel builds the modern world — from bridges and hospitals to railways, transmission lines, wind turbines, and electric vehicles. But steel doesn’t appear out of thin air; it begins with metallurgical coal, and Alberta holds some of the best deposits of it anywhere on earth.
Responsible development of these resources can create high-paying jobs, support families in communities across the province, and supply a material the world still needs to build critical infrastructure.
Modern mining in Alberta operates under strict environmental regulations and oversight, ensuring that development is responsible and reclamation is guaranteed.
If you believe Alberta should responsibly develop its metallurgical coal and be proud of the role it plays in building the modern world, add your name to the petition and stand with the people who keep this province working!
There’s a story people in Alberta understand.
It’s the story of the workers who wake up before sunrise, climb into trucks or haul packs, and head out to do the jobs that keep the modern world running. Oil and gas workers. Welders. Heavy equipment operators. Truck drivers. And yes — coal miners.
For generations, these men and women have powered this province and built the communities we call home. They’ve built the schools, the roads, the hospitals, and the industries that sustain modern life.
Today, those same workers are facing a new wave of misinformation about coal development in Alberta.
What often gets left out of the conversation is that the coal found in Alberta’s eastern slopes isn’t coal for power plants. It’s metallurgical coal — the kind used to make steel.
And steel is everywhere.
Bridges. Hospitals. Railways. Transmission lines. Wind turbines. Solar farms. Electric vehicles. Defense equipment.
At meaningful industrial scale, steel simply cannot be produced without metallurgical coal.
That’s why countries around the world — including the United States and members of the European Union — consider metallurgical coal a strategic resource tied directly to infrastructure and national security.
Alberta has some of the best undeveloped deposits of metallurgical coal anywhere in the world.
Developing those resources responsibly means good jobs for Alberta workers, strong communities in places like Grande Cache, Hinton, and the Crowsnest Pass, and materials the world needs to build the future.
Modern mining in Alberta is subject to strict environmental oversight. Projects are monitored by the Alberta Energy Regulator, companies must meet rigorous standards for water, land, and air protection, and financial security is required to ensure full reclamation when mines close.
Responsible resource development and environmental stewardship are not opposites. In Alberta, they go hand in hand.
The Alberta Digs Coal campaign is about standing up for the workers who built this province and the resources that continue to support it.
It’s about rejecting misinformation and choosing facts.
And it’s about saying something simple and true:
If the world still needs steel — and it does — then Alberta should be proud to help supply the materials that make it possible.
