AOC threatens Supreme Court impeachment over presidential immunity ruling

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has sparked controversy by threatening to file articles of impeachment against members of the U.S. Supreme Court following their recent ruling on presidential immunity. The decision, which determined that presidents have immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts but not for unofficial conduct, was met with strong disapproval from the congresswoman.

The 6-3 ruling along ideological lines sent former President Donald Trump's case, in which he pleaded not guilty to charges related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, back to a lower D.C. court for further review.

The Supreme Court stated, "The President is not above the law. But under our system of separated powers, the President may not be prosecuted for exercising his core constitutional powers, and he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for his official acts."

Ocasio-Cortez took to X to express her dissatisfaction, claiming the Supreme Court "has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control." She further stated the ruling "represents an assault on American democracy" and declared her intention to file articles of impeachment upon returning to Congress.

Her comments drew swift criticism from various quarters. AG Hamilton, a prominent conservative legal commentator on X, argued that filing impeachment articles against the Supreme Court for an unfavorable ruling is itself "an actual assault on our system." He suggested that such actions indicate a lack of seriousness in upholding the oath to the Constitution.

Republican Representative Greg Murphy urged Ocasio-Cortez to "be quiet," expressing fatigue with what he termed "theatrics."
