Canada ranked #1 globally (by people who don't live here)
A new survey found Canada was the most positive influence on world affairs for the 10th consecutive year, a ranking that Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle said represents how none of the respondents actually lived in Canada.
Canada has been named the world's most positive influence on world affairs for the tenth year in a row, according to an Ipsos world affairs report, a result Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle questioned on Monday's Rebel Roundup livestream.
The Ipsos survey polled 23,000 respondents across 30 countries, none of whom live in Canada.
Germany and France — "two other failing countries," Sheila noted — also ranked among the top countries. Iran and Israel ranked at the bottom.
"So they asked a bunch of people who don't live here, who don't get news about us." Sheila said.
"Oh, 23,000 people are listening to little clips of the CBC and think Canadians are doing great," Lise replied.
Foreign respondents are getting a heavily narrated version of Canada's reality, one where Canada is a plucky underdog standing up to the big orange giant to the south, rather than a country where communities are visibly devolving and newcomers are quickly reconsidering their decision to move here.
"They think of us as some sort of mighty mouse being crushed by the hand of the great orange man," Sheila said. "And it's like, no — things are bad. Real bad."
Cult Montreal, the culture website celebrating the poll result, receives approximately $113,000 in grants from the government, added Sheila, and that's without factoring in payments from the Local Journalism Initiative program and federal journalism tax credits.
The Quebec government also funds Cult Montreal to the tune of $127,000, leading wonder "what possible motive" the outlet could have to "tell lies about Canadians' experience," given it receives around $250,000 in handouts.
Rebel News, meanwhile, has never taken a dollar from the government.
Rebel Roundup airs Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 11 a.m. MT / 1 p.m. ET.
