Concerns over Liberals' new 'hate crime' bill rise as violent crime soars
The Liberals' new 'hate crime' legislation creates four new criminal offences with lengthy prison sentences.
On Tuesday's live stream, Tamara Ugolini and Lise Merle reacted to the Liberals' introduction of a new 'hate crime' bill despite violent crime surging across Canada.
The Liberals introduced Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, on September 19. It would amend the Criminal Code to create new 'hate crime' offences with stiff prison sentences of up to 10 years.
Backlash from free speech advocates has been fierce following Liberal Justice Minister Sean Fraser's press conference earlier this week.

Lise condemned the Liberal government for continually attempting to police speech while perpetrators of violent crimes are often not held accountable.
"Really what this is, why this should concern Canadians, is because we're following the same trajectory as the United Kingdom," she said.
"In Britain, if you say something that the government doesn't like, they will come and pick you up and throw you in jail. Like moms who are defending their little communities in Britain have been thrown in jail for 30 months or something, it's incredible," Lise continued.
The bill has been criticized by several civil liberties and free speech advocates for overreaching into protected expression and risking selective enforcement.
