Kamala Harris fact-checked over Trump abortion ban claim

Vice President Kamala Harris faced criticism and a fact-check on social media platform X after claiming that former President Donald Trump would implement a nationwide abortion ban. Harris's tweet, which stated, "Donald Trump would ban abortion nationwide," was quickly met with a community note contradicting her assertion.

The abortion debate has become a central issue in recent elections, with pro-abortion rights advocates seeing success in various state-level votes.

The community note pointed out that "President Trump has repeatedly said he will not sign a national abortion ban," and provided links to various news articles and a video of Trump addressing the issue. This fact-check came just days after Trump reiterated during a debate with President Joe Biden that he would not support federal bans on abortion or abortion pills.

During the recent CNN debate, Trump defended the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade while characterizing Democrats as the "radicals" in the abortion debate. He emphasized his preference for state-level decision-making on abortion laws, stating, "We think the Democrats are the radicals, not the Republicans."

This is not the first time Harris has made such claims about Trump's abortion stance. She has previously accused him of "gaslighting" voters and insisted he would sign a national abortion ban if given the opportunity. However, Trump and his campaign have been careful in addressing the abortion issue, supporting some state-level restrictions while criticizing others they deem too conservative.
