On a Tuesday afternoon, while Parliament was not sitting, Foreign Minister Anita Anand posted on social media that Canada would introduce restrictions on trade in goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

There was no deabte or vote in the House of Commons. No question period for MPs to raise concerns with the government's direction. There wasn't even an effective date or product list No product list — let alone any legal mechanisms for the plan. Just a post on social media.

Ezra Levant broke it down on Tuesday's episode of The Ezra Levant Show.

The announcement from Anand came alongside matching declarations from the United Kingdom, France and nine European nations. The British government went the furthest, with Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stating the government's position that there was ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, declaring the occupation unlawful.

In response, Israel closed the British consulate in Jerusalem within hours and expelled Britain from the Gaza monitoring centre. Israel's foreign minister warned of counter-measures against other countries that act against Israel.

"Other countries," Ezra noted. "That's us."

Ezra's core argument was not about the merits of Israel's settlement policy. It was about what Carney himself had promised — and what he then rewarded regardless.

A year ago, Carney recognized a Palestinian state with five explicit conditions: reform of the Palestinian Authority, hold elections in 2026 with no Hamas participation, a demilitarization of the Palestinian state, Hamas disarming, and Hamas playing no role in future governance. He stated each condition publicly, repeatedly, and on the record.

"Let's check on those one year later," Ezra said.

Elections have not been held, though a tentative date is scheduled for November 2026, though it's hard to say if it will actually occur given no Palestinian has cast a vote since 2005.

On the exclusion of Hamas, the terror group announced its building an electoral bloc and has no intention of disarming. The Palestinian Authority's 'pay-for-slay' program, which sees pensions paid to terrorists scaled by the number of Jews killed, is still functioning but under a different name, a claim backed up by data from the U.S. State Department, which confirmed $156 million is still flowing as of this spring.

And while the hostages held following the Oct. 7, 2023, terror attack were released, that was a result brought to fruition by Donald Trump and the Israeli Defense Forces, Ezra noted.

"Five conditions. Mark Carney himself. None delivered," he said. "Not one debated in Parliament. And the reward not withdrawn, not paused, not even mentioned. They're doubling down." 

In Ezra's summary: "Palestinians break every promise and they get a state. Israel builds houses in Judea and Samaria and they get sanctions. No Jews allowed. That is not even-handed. That is not a peace process. That's punishment and it only runs one way."

Worse yet is how the process has played out.

"Not one MP got to ask what goods, what date, what's the legal mechanism, how much trade is affected," Ezra said, raising concerns about a pattern that is becoming all too familiar: recognizing Palestine — no vote; sanctioning two Israeli cabinet ministers — no vote.

"If the decision is so obviously right," he said, "why is he so afraid to put it to the House?"

The consequences may not stay in the Middle East. Thirty-seven U.S. states have anti-boycott laws, most modelled on legislation designed to stop the Arab boycott of Israel.

Florida's law — amended last year to include foreign governments — already blacklists Spain for sanctioning Israel, and Canada has now followed the same path Spain has taken. Florida alone buys $6.3 billion in Canadian goods annually.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said that Britain will not be able to do business in Florida.

"Add them up," Ezra said. "About $325 billion of Canadian goods a year go into states with these laws. More than three-quarters of everything we sell to Americans. In the middle of a trade war with Washington, Carney just handed 37 state legislatures a reason — for what? Settlement dates, wine, herbs? The government can't even tell you how much Canada imports."

The timing, Ezra noted, was consistent with a pattern. Last year Carney recognized Palestine on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. This year the settlement sanctions landed on the same night. "It's quite a coincidence," he said. "It's becoming a bit of a habit."

"Hamas keeps its guns and gets to run for office," he closed. "Abbas keeps paying the killers and keeps his state. Israel gets sanctioned seven weeks before its election by a prime minister who hasn't faced his own Parliament since June. And you? A trade war with Florida and Texas and Michigan. But then again, in Carney's defence — he already started that war."
