Poilievre denounces shocking prison sentences Crown is seeking for convoy organizers Lich, Barber

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber have been facing up against the wrath of law enforcement after being convicted of mischief for leading a peaceful, anti-mandate protest on the streets of downtown Ottawa in 2022.

On Monday's live stream, David Menzies and Sheila Gunn Reid reacted to news that Crown prosecutors are seeking seven and eight year prison sentences for Freedom Convoy organizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber.

Lich took to X on Monday to confirm that the Crown is seeking to put her behind bars for seven years along with Barber for eight years. The Freedom Convoy organizers were both convicted of mischief for their roles in organizing the peaceful protests against COVID-19 public health orders and vaccine mandates in Ottawa starting in late January of 2022.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre condemned the state of Canada's justice system under the Liberals in a statement posted to social media.

“Let's get this straight,” he wrote on X. “While rampant violent offenders are released hours after their most recent charges & antisemitic rioters vandalize businesses, terrorize daycares & block traffic without consequences, the Crown wants 7 years prison time for the charge of mischief for Lich & Barber.”

“How is this justice?” he asked.

Sheila described the far-reaching impact of the Freedom Convoy demonstrations. "It led to the end of Jason Kenney in Alberta. Now we have Danielle Smith, who is really leading the way on major cultural and economic issues in this country," she said.

"It liberated Albertans from Jason Kenney's vaccine passport, that most definitely wasn't a vaccine passport according to him."

Critics have taken aim at the harsh sentencing recommendations after a Quebec woman who admitted to travelling to Syria to join ISIS in 2014 was sentenced to only one day in jail earlier this week.

Please help Tamara Lich fight back against this outrageous political prosecution!

The Democracy Fund, a registered Canadian charity, is continuing to crowdfund Tamara Lich’s legal defence and appeal following her sentence of 18 months of house arrest for her role in the 2022 Freedom Convoy protest.

Tamara has filed her appeal challenging the conviction. She is represented by her lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon.

Tamara — a mom and grandmother from Medicine Hat, Alberta — has already spent 49 days in jail awaiting trial and has faced a legal process spanning more than three years. She now lives under significant restrictions while the appeal proceeds.

If you believe peaceful political protest should not be criminalized, please chip in today to help cover Tamara’s ongoing legal costs.

Pierre Poilievre must keep opposing biased judges. He’s speaking for all of us who were in favour of the convoy. And it’s the Liberal leaders who are the small fringe with unacceptable ideas, not the millions of us.
