Save the Pipe Organ!
The University of Alberta is planning to remove the memorial pipe organ from Convocation Hall, a space that has long been central to graduation, performance, and remembrance.
For many, this isn't just a renovation. It feels like a quiet loss of history.
So we’re taking focused, practical action.
Rebel News is launching a targeted email campaign to reach the people who can actually influence this decision — starting with the Dean of Music. We’re asking simple, direct questions: Were students and faculty meaningfully consulted? Were alternatives explored? How do you replace an instrument that serves both as a teaching tool and a cultural landmark?
We’re also contacting the Board of Governors, because this is about leadership as much as logistics. Boards are responsible for protecting the long-term integrity of their institutions. That means asking whether this decision reflects proper consultation, careful review, and respect for the university’s legacy.
And we’re widening the conversation — reaching out to alumni, donors, arts leaders, veterans’ groups, elected officials, and media across Alberta. Because decisions that affect shared history shouldn’t happen quietly.
We are calling on the University of Alberta to:
Pause the removal.
Share the studies and alternatives.
Engage the public.
Preserve the organ.
Because once something like this is gone, it can't be brought back.
If you agree, take one minute to act: send the email, and pass it on.
Real change starts small — but it builds quickly when people speak up together.

James L Pigott commented 2026-04-27 18:39:34 -0400A pipe organ is a grand tribute to history and should not be removed. Thousands of pipe organs have been lost over the past several decades due to the shortsightedness of theatres, churches and other venue operators around the world. The traditional value of these mighty installations should not be undervalued. Keep it. Yo will not regret it. -

Kathleen Denninger commented 2026-04-27 14:38:09 -0400Convocation Hall needs a pipe organ and it has the right one now. Why would anyone with care for heritage, etc., remove this beautiful organ? It needs to stay! -
Bryan Sehn commented 2026-04-25 21:49:16 -0400What people don’t understand is that this pipe organ needs to stay in the building as it was probably built into the building. Not like a guitar or such that you can pack it away and leave. It becomes one with the building.
