Bye-bye bike lanes on Bloor Street

Protesters gathered in Toronto in opposition to the impending elimination of certain bike lanes.

Talk about the long and winding road… Last year, Ontario Premier Doug Ford had had enough of Toronto’s bike lanes — part of the reason why Hogtown has the worst gridlock in North America (and yes, that includes Los Angeles and Mexico City!)

It was time for the province to overrule the City of Toronto and demand certain bike lanes be removed. Alas, Ontario Superior Court Justice Paul Schabas blocked the removals last summer. Apparently removing such lanes is… unconstitutional?

However, the Court of Appeal recently determined that there is no constitutional right to bike lanes under Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And that removing the lanes does not legally amount to a deprivation of life, liberty, or security of the person.

Prior to the removal of the bike lanes on Bloor Street West on Tuesday, a handful of cyclists gathered to protest the impending demolition. But get this: when Rebel News asked demonstrators to make the case for bike lanes, we were routinely snubbed.

Now why would that be? Isn’t a demonstration all about conveying one’s opinion to a mass audience? Apparently not. Which makes us think: if you can’t make the case for bike lanes, maybe you don’t have a good case to begin with?

In any event, the bicycling advocates say they will take this case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada if need be. They apparently truly believe that they have a constitutional right to cycle in dedicated bike lanes. Good luck with that argument…
