Carney says he 'just got here' as Canadians give up on homeownership
'It's absolutely wild to me that Carney is still clinging to this idea,' said Tamara Ugolini on Thursday's Rebel Roundup livestream, 'as though he hasn't been an integral part of the Liberal cabinet for years.'
Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to a question about Canadians giving up on home ownership by telling the Conservative leader that he has only just arrived, 18 months into his time in office.
During Question Period in the House of Commons, Pierre Poilievre pressed Carney on a Habitat for Humanity survey of 22 nations, which he said found Canadians were the most likely to have given up on the dream of owning a home. According to Poilievre, 56 percent of Canadians believe they will never own one, twice the international average.
“When will we have an end to the promises of home ownership?” he asked.
Carney reminded the Conservative leader that he "just got here," and argued that conditions are improving.
“Every single month, housing affordability has improved in this country. Jobs are up, the economy is up," he said.
Poilievre fired back that rent has nearly doubled, rising 86 percent from $970 to $1,800, and said Carney was the one who promised to build at “unimaginable speeds.”
The exchange was replayed on Thursday's Rebel Roundup livestream, where Sheila Gunn Reid and Tamara Ugolini pointed to Carney's long record as a banker and central bank insider before he entered politics.
“It's absolutely wild to me that Carney is still clinging to this idea that he just got here," said Tamara, "as though he hasn't been an integral part of the Liberal cabinet for years.”
"You have all the same people doing all the same things," added Sheila. "And everything continues to get worse and worse and worse.”
