Cowboys carry off rodeo protesters like toddlers
Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle reacted on Tuesday’s Rebel Roundup to video of animal rights activists jumping the fence into the arena at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton to protest calf roping, only to be calmly carried out by cowboys who seemed thoroughly unimpressed.
Animal rights activists picked the wrong crowd at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton.
Video shared on Facebook shows protesters, signs in hand, jumping over the barrier and into the arena to protest calf roping. Sheila Gunn Reid and Lise Merle broke it down on Tuesday's Rebel Roundup, and both noted how dangerous the stunt was.
"They jump the fence, which is so dangerous," Sheila said. "The animals could have been spooked, hurt, whatever."
The cowboys, entirely unbothered, simply scooped the protesters up and carried them out. "They picked him up and carried him like a bride over the threshold," she continued.
Lise compared it to removing a toddler in the middle of a tantrum. "When your toddler has a fit in a restaurant, you have to take them out by the coat," she said. "That's what happened to these guys."
The protesters were identified as Gerber Gereen Anderson and Michelle Labrosse.
Sheila pointed out who they were really hurting: "This is somebody's big day, by the way, that you losers are ruining," she said.
"These young men have worked hard all season, spent time away from their families, abused their bodies. They fought their way all the way to the Canadian Finals Rodeo. This is their shot at some big money."
The hosts also noted the protesters clearly didn't understand what they were protesting.
Calf roping, Sheila explained, comes straight from working ranches, where cowboys catch calves to tag and vaccinate them. And rodeo animals, she said, are anything but neglected.
"Rodeo stock get better health care than the rest of us," she said. "Those animals are more spoiled and cared for than any animal on the surface of the earth. That is just a fact."
Next time, Sheila and Lise joked, they should skip security altogether and let the ropers handle it themselves.
Rebel Roundup airs Monday through Friday at 11 a.m. MT / 1 p.m. ET.
