The Department of Justice has declared that a terrorist attack on New York City in June was an act of Islamic terrorism related to ISIS.

The previously sealed indictment was published on Wednesday at a federal court in Brooklyn, detailing how Bosnian national Dzenan Camovic committed a knife and firearm attack on multiple officers of the New York City Police Department during the George Floyd riots.

Police say that Camovic yelled, “Allahu Akbar” several times during the attack.

Distant video footage of the attack went viral on social media during that time, and the NYPD later released surveillance video that captured the incident in its entirety.

Camovic, who was in the United States illegally, is said to have been motivated to attack the officers in support of “violent Islamist extremism.” He is currently in custody and scheduled for arraignment at a later date.

Two NYPD officers were patrolling Brooklyn to apprehend looters amid the widespread rioting on June 3, when a man, later identified as Camovic, stabbed one officer in the neck. The attack happened at 11:45pm, nearly four hours after curfew.

Camovic is said to have then pursued the other officer and then returned to attack the first.

During the attack, the man allegedly stole the injured police officer’s service handgun and shot at other officers who arrived at the scene. Two officers were shot in the hand before apprehending him.

In the affidavit, U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr stated that Camovic was in possession of material relating to ISIS.

“We know that Camovic repeatedly yelled, ‘Allahu Akbar’ during his attack. We know that he possessed a significant volume of materials that demonstrates his interest in and support for violent Islamist extremism, including materials related to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS),” said Barr:

“But the defendant’s access to the dark web and his use of encrypted communication platforms have created evidentiary roadblocks to fully learning his plans and potential co-conspirators. This is the second violent Islamist extremist attack on our land in the last nine months where the attacker used encrypted technology that can help cover his tracks and mask his communications. If not for the heroism and bravery of the responding NYPD officers who returned fire and took the assailant down early in the attack, untold additional officers and innocents could have been killed or injured.”

If convicted, Camovic faces life in prison.
