Dr. Anthony Fauci predicted on Thursday that the COVID-19 pandemic is nearing its end, thanks to upcoming vaccines proven to be effective against the virus.
At a virtual health conference hosted by London-based think tank Chatham House, Dr. Fauci stated, “Certainly it’s not going to be a pandemic for a lot longer because I believe the vaccines are going to turn that around.”
Despite Fauci’s positive outlook, the nation’s top infectious disease experts have warned COVID-19 will likely be here to stay.
“I doubt we’re going to eradicate this,” he said. “I think we need to plan that this is something we may need to maintain control over chronically. It may be something that becomes endemic that we have to just be careful about.”
Biopharmaceutical companies across the globe have been racing to develop a safe and effective vaccine against COVID-19. Earlier this week, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their vaccine is more than 90% effective against the virus in a late-stage study.
“Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our Phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19,” stated Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer Chairman and CEO.
“We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen. With today’s news, we are a significant step closer to providing people around the world with a much-needed breakthrough to help bring an end to this global health crisis. We look forward to sharing additional efficacy and safety data generated from thousands of participants in the coming weeks.”
On Wednesday, Moderna stated that it had enough data to assess the efficiency of the vaccination. The results have yet to be released from the company, but Dr. Fauci stated that the results may be released soon.
