From the fringes to power: How America’s socialists are seizing the Democratic Party
A radical socialist fringe in the U.S. is taking over the Democratic Party. Once laughed out of the room, these candidates are now winning primaries and leadership roles while rejecting capitalism, border security and Western allies.

Tonight on The Ezra Levant Show: a radical fringe of the Democratic Party is winning important primaries across the United States. These are America’s socialists, every bit as radical as Canada’s NDP.
For years, America’s two major parties shared a core vision. They sparred over details but both backed capitalism, the Constitution, borders and Western allies. That agreement is gone. A radical movement now runs the Democratic Party. The fringe once laughed out of the room has taken over the primaries and is calling the shots.
This did not happen overnight. A full generation has been steeped in woke dogma from kindergarten through university and into the workforce. Those ideas, once late-night campus rants, now control the media, courts, boardrooms and politics. Add unchecked mass immigration and this coalition is not just hungry for power. It is getting it.

Consider Zohran Mamdani, now mayor of New York City. One of his first moves was proposing government-run grocery stores. He champions third-world radicalism and has threatened to arrest Israel’s prime minister if he sets foot in New York. He is not an isolated extremist. He is the opening act.
In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed just clinched the Democratic primary. His radicalism is so blatant he would not praise the elimination of one of Iran’s most notorious ayatollahs. He has made his politics largely about Jews and Israel, spoken fondly of sharia, and asserted Muslims hate America, all while running for the U.S. Senate. His wife wears a hijab. He has mocked parts of his own state and dismissed American football as “toxic masculinity.” At the same time he runs a jester tour, singing and clowning so voters write him off as harmless. The act is camouflage.
Canada has its version inside the NDP. Jagmeet Singh kept it deliberately harmless, tanking his own party so it would not split the left from Justin Trudeau. He was probably the worst NDP leader in its history and the most useful Liberal ally of the same period. His successor, Avi Lewis, is different: smart, a policy wonk. With five seats he will not govern. But imagine if the NDP actually got power. That is exactly what is happening with the DSA, the radical wing of the Democrats. They are no longer a fringe pressure group. They are inside the machine, and the machine is bending.
Today’s Democratic Party offers not just progressivism but outright socialism, hostility to the West and a rejection of American values. The Democratic Socialists of America demand amnesty for illegal immigrants, abolishing the Senate and Supreme Court, scrapping ICE and America’s borders, and handing key industries to the government. They want to defund the military and the police.

This is not campaign rhetoric. DSA Watch has caught members admitting their goal: “The most important thing we can do is take America down from within.” It is now a litmus test. When pressed on who will arrest rapists if the police are gone, they dodge. Frances Gill simply calls it a “hypothetical.”

The hypocrisy is endless. Francesca Hong labels her own mixed-race son “proximity to whiteness” and slams the service industry as “rooted in white supremacy.” One day she demands the cancellation of Thanksgiving; the next she says she loves it. DSA co-chair Megan Romer says they believe in “taxing the hell out of millionaires,” then stumbles when asked what that actually means. On Israel they do not even pretend. Romer says she “probably would have” joined marches the day after Oct. 7 and calls the massacre “largely inevitable.” Mamdani claims the “boot of the NYPD” is “laced by the IDF.” Anti-Israel bigotry is not an accident. It is the core of their movement.

This is the starkest proof of America’s cultural divide. A generation raised on grievance and indoctrination is seizing the levers of power. Without a reckoning, unless ordinary citizens stand up, this radical fringe will not just keep winning primaries. They will soon control the whole country.

Denyse O'Leary commented 2026-08-11 20:46:54 -0400I was talking to someone today who offered an explanation of the explosion of anti-Semitism among leftists. He said, leftists tend to attack the nearest first. Jewish people, for many years, largely supported the Democratic Party. But because most of the ones who were in a position to do so were established professional or business people, they tended to act as a brake on radical leftism. To go very far left, the party must deny them recognition or influence. Of course, many Jewish people may continue to reflexively fund, support, and vote for the Democrats but there is no question that the relationship has changed. They are feeding a tiger who will eat them in due course, I fear.
His approach sounds plausible to me.
