Tonight on The Ezra Levant Show: hundreds turn out for Tamara Lich in her hometown of Medicine Hat as an Ottawa judge prepares to decide whether she can continue travelling outside Alberta for her work.
Hundreds of people gathered in Medicine Hat to show their support for Lich as she remains under strict travel conditions following a legal fight over her work with Rebel News outside Alberta.
Lich has continued working with Rebel News under her existing conditions, with Corrections Alberta aware of her journalism and her travel. But after she travelled with Rebel News to Ottawa to cover events at the Ambassador’s House on July 4, left-wing journalists reacted angrily to her presence and reporting.
Now an Ottawa judge is set to hear arguments over whether Lich should be allowed to continue travelling outside Alberta at all. A ruling is expected in seven days.
Until then, Lich remains largely confined to her home in Medicine Hat, apart from exemptions that allow her to work with Rebel News. An extended one-on-one interview with Lich, filmed in her backyard, is also being held back until after the hearing so it does not interfere with the court case or her sentencing conditions.
While in town, a rally organised by Pastor Patrick, a local Christian pastor and freedom advocate, brought together roughly 200 people on only a couple of days’ notice.
The event gave Lich an opportunity to speak directly to people in her hometown, alongside Pastor Patrick and other supporters. The turnout reflected the support she continues to receive from people who believe she should be able to continue her work as a journalist.
Medicine Hat itself has a long history of standing up for its own identity. Rudyard Kipling visited the city and famously objected when local leaders considered changing its name. He believed Medicine Hat was too distinctive a name to throw away, and the story has since become part of the city’s history.
There was a similar sense of local pride at the rally for Lich, where supporters came together to show that she has not been forgotten while her legal battle continues.
The bigger question now is what happens after the Ottawa hearing. Lich wants to continue doing her work with Rebel News and travelling to cover stories across the country, while the court will decide whether her current restrictions should become even more severe.
For now, the ruling is only a week away. The crowd in Medicine Hat has already made clear where it stands, turning out in force for one of its own while she waits to find out whether she will be able to continue her work outside Alberta.
